Hello,
I promised some feedback when I returned to the UK.
The big surprise of the trip (Best of Vietnam & Cambodia 14 days) was that we were a tour of two people and that we had our own driver and guide at each stage of the trip. We had imagined that we would be a small part of a larger group, but were very pleased to be a small group of two. The trip started badly with the visa arrangements at Hanoi airport. We were under the impression that we had obtained a visa through VietnamTourism (we had been emailed a document which purported to be a visa), but the document proved to be useless to Immigration officials at the airport. We had to complete a new application and the requirement for a passport photo was waived by the payment of a few dollars. The "till" appeared to be the Immigration official's pocket. We already knew we had to pay some dollars on entry to the country...but further dollars were required.
The first night's hotel was very bad (Grand View). The room was dirty, the corridors were dirty, the bathroom was only partly functioning and the breakfast was very bad......plus the view left a lot to be desired. Our stand-in guide (Mr. Tigne) saw the room and did a good job of getting us transferred to the much better Luxor Hotel. The sights in Hanoi were good and the guiding and driving were both excellent.
Halong Bay was disappointing as the cruise covered only a short distance at a slow speed. The shore side facilities are chaotic and dirty and the standard of the operation of the "cruise" on the tourist junk Paloma was amateur. However, the food and the cabin were both good and staff very friendly and helpful. The tragedy which affected another of these junks a few days later is more than enough unfortunate evidence that these cruises need to be operated by better run and better equipped vessels (safety systems and crew standards).
The remainder of the trip was excellent and again, the standard of guides was high. Mr. Hao in particular had a happy personality and considerable personal local knowledge of the Cu Chi area. The local knowledge of Mr. Rattanak at Siem Reap should also be commended.
The meals included in the trip were very good and the lunches tended to be too much to eat!
The best hotel was the Royal Angkor Resort at Siem Reap.
Mention should be made that when we checked in at Saigon Airport to fly to Siem Reap Vietnam Airlines refused to accept one of our party because the passport had only five months before expiry. Vietnam Airlines insisted that we abandon the flight and go to visit the embassy. This problem was eventually solved by our signing of a waiver of responsibility for Vietnam Airlines which apparently expected the passenger to be refused entry to Cambodia. There was no such problem with Cambodian immigration, but the officials required the payment of $1 per head in lieu of passport photos. I recommend that you advise future travelers either to apply for visas in advance or to come equipped with passport photos for entry to each country and that they should have a minimum of six months left on their passport.
Four photos are attached. One shows the view from the Grand View Hotel bedroom, another shows my wife, Sue with the guide Mr. Hoang at Hue, another shows our guide Mr. Rattanak at Angkor Thom and the last shows us taking an elephant ride between temples at Angkor Wat
I hope this helps

Hi Toni,
We are now back home and had a great trip. Thanks for making it so memorable.
Refer responses below in red to your specific questions.
Further, we have completed feed back forms and given them to each guide and I assume they have been forwarded to you.
You are welcome to use me as a referee for potential future clients and we will recommend you to our friends.
1. Guide Service
All guides were great and I would not like to say who was best/poorest - excellent local knowledge, friendly, flexible (in making suggestions on other places to visit and changing order of visits), good communication with locals on our behalf in explaining our needs/requests.
2. Driver Service
Whilst most had limited knowledge of English, the guides were able to communicate with them and there existing good working relationships. All were experienced and safe drivers. All vehicles were modern, clean and tidy.
3. Hotels & Breakfasts:
Clearly the best hotel was Royal Empire in Siem Reap - new, excellent facilities, friendly, professional - would rate this as 4 Star. Lot of new hotels are in Siem Reap.
Worst was Hysoke in Luang Prabang - poorly renovated, we had to request a change of room for various reasons, breakfast poor, too far out of town. Lucky to be 2 star. If you go into the hotel web site you will see the adverse comments made by other people.
Otherwise the hotels were generally acceptable but on reflection we should have asked you to book 4 star accomodation as the cost differential between 3 and 4 star at this time of the year is not significant.
4. Lunches and Dinners:
All of the restaurants were excellent. I do not know who selected them but they were very good. The tree top restaurant ( cant recall the name) in the Mekong Delta was perhaps the stand out.
5. Others:
I will send you a picture taken at Mekong and the guide at Ankor Wat had a photo taken by a professional photographer and I thought it was going to you. We took over 1,000 photos of our trip and if you would like some I will send to you when I have a moment.
There was overall too many temples and pegodas. When we reviewed the initial itinerary that you sent to us we did not realize how many there were. If the tour was purely cultural then it would have been fine but we were looking for both cultural, adventure plus local places of interest.
The local guides were keen to show us their local temples/pagodas as they were on the itinerary plus they were either pre booked or they were proud of them thus we did not want to upset them. Some of the guides suggested additional local trips.
Mekong - we saw the wholesale floating market but the guide suggested we include the retail floating market which we did and it was great. He arranged for us to transfer to a boat and have a pineapple with a local - other tour companies do this.
Phnom Penh - the guide suggested going to S21 and Genicide Park as this was part of the recent Cambodia history. We took up his suggestion and found it very interesting.
Vientiane - the guide suggested going to Budda Park. It was interesting and gave us an opportunity to see more of the country side in Laos.
Luang Prabang - visit the waterfalls with the elephants, or some white water rafting, or kayaking. Time did not permit us to do this but talking to other tourists in LB who did it they thought it was great.
Halong Bay - there was a typhoon in the area thus we could not spend a night on a junk which was meant to be a highlight of our trip. We had to spend the night on the mainland at Halong which the guide did a good job in organising but when we went out to the caves the next day found out that there were some junk operators that did go out over night. Maybe our junk operator was purely looking at our safety.
Hoi An - we had a spare day and the guide recommended that we went out to Cham Island diving, snorkling, swimming etc. We did it and had a great time.
Nha Trang - again we had a spare day and the guide recommended a day trip to Bamboo Island and other areas of the bay - snorkling, swimming, lunch etc. It was very entertaining and we had a great day. It is one of the most popular attraction for both locals and tourists - we went on the Mama Linh boat and it was great.
Suggest that in future you ask clients if they are seeking cultural, adventure, fast, slow or what ever in their itinerary. This will help you in planning the itinerary.
Rgds
